Are you carting kids from place to place? Perhaps you’ve got a van or SUV that keeps them contained behind the driver (I hope you have bars for the little rascals!) for safety? Or perhaps you’re looking to purchase a mini-van or SUV? I’ve reviewed several and considered their value for the average family and I want to share my results with you.
Mini-vans
Different engines are available. You’ll want to get the largest engine available for whatever mini-van you choose. I recommend at least a 3.5 or 3.8 liter. Definitely avoid buying a 4-cylinder Dodge or Chrysler, they do not have enough power for typical family loads, hauling, and heavy use. According to Crashtest, Ford Windstar, Toyota Sienna and ‘99 - ‘02 Honda Odyssey are the three safest vehicles on the road today. Mini-vans handle and drive just like a car with the bonus of better visibility due to higher profile and upright driving position. Mini-vans are not capable of towing duties. Front wheel drives specifically, have extremely limited towing capacity.
Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV)
Designed for off-road use, 98% of SUV’s never leave the road. These highly functional vehicles travel with power-charged engine and trani functions that get the job done. They handle significantly better than a car, with heavier frames, but their high profile design can present a dangerous alternative for drivers who corner at excessive speeds. Not the safest vehicle on the road, SUV’s are probably the most prevalent multi-passenger vehicle.
Pickup Trucks
More new pickup trucks are sold in this country than any other type of vehicle. Smaller models now offer quad or crew-cab and four-door versions seating five or more adults. Equipped with towing packages, these rear-wheel drive vehicles can handle most towing duties. High-performance 8 and 10 cylinder engines up the anti on power caps allowing pickups to get about 15 miles per gallon. Pickup trucks do not handle well on ice and snow without weight in the rear-end. However, they can haul snow anywhere you want to take it.
